Your Visa Class

Your visa was issued to you by the U.S. Consulate based on the information that you presented to them on your visa application and in your visa interview.  You were issued a specific visa that allows you to be lawfully present in the United States for the specific reason that you presented to the Consulate.

While you are in the United States, the U.S. federal government expects you to only engage in activities that are specific to your visa class, and NOT to engage in activities that are specific to a different visa class.

Maintaining your lawful presence/status in the United States is your personal responsibility

A Word of Caution About Your Lawful Status

When you were granted admission to the United States by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at your Port of Entry (POE) to the U.S. you were given an Admission Stamp in your passport that lists the date you entered the U.S., and has your visa class written above the line and your Admit Until Date written below the line.

You must depart the U.S. on or before the date indicated on the admission stamp in your passport.  Failure to depart the U.S. on time will result in you being out-of-status.  Under U.S. law, visas of travelers who are out-of-status are automatically voided.  Failure to depart the United States on time may also result in you being ineligible to receive a visa to enter the U.S. in the future.
