The mission of Office of Assessment is improvement of student learning. The Office accomplishes this by assisting areas throughout the college in developing appropriate assessment methodologies and success indicators which can be used to support, enhance, report, and/or improve the quality of teaching and learning. The Office provides training, analysis, and support for on-going assessment of student learning and development.

Assessment is the ongoing process of:
  • Establishing clear, measurable expected outcomes of student learning.
  • Ensuring that students have sufficient opportunities to achieve those outcomes.
  • Systematically gathering, analyzing, and interpreting evidence to determine how well student learning matches our expectations.
  • Using the resulting information to understand and improve student learning.

Kansas City Kansas Community College uses both institution-wide measures and program-specific measures to assess student outcomes. Broad measures include the Collegiate Assessment of Academic Performance (CAAP), the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) and the Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory (SSI) and embedded assessments of student's work in courses. Course competencies have been established for each of the college's associate degree and certificate programs. In addition, general education competencies have been established and are measured through the use of a nationally-normed test, student artifacts, and surveys.

The Student Academic Assessment Committee (SAAC) monitors the outcomes assessment process and acts as a catalyst for continual improvement. The SAAC also conducts professional development activities in assessment.

Assessment Plan

The assessment program at Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) is an on-going process that is defined as a work in progress. The assessment activities at KCKCC have expanded dramatically in recent years, as evidenced by the information contained within this report. The plan seeks to inform the reader about what we have done and about future efforts within our assessment program.

This report will seek to answer the following questions:
  • How is the assessment program structured at KCKCC?
  • What measures and standards have been used for assessing student learning?
  • How are/will the results of assessment used to identify changes that may be needed if student
  • learning is to improve?
