Approved: 06/15/2010 | Updated: 10/27/2026

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to establish that the Kansas City Kansas Community College (“KCKCC” or “the College”) provides computing, network, and communication resources to support its educational mission, administrative operations, authorized College business, and community engagement. This policy also establishes standards for responsible, ethical, and lawful use of the College’s information technology resources.

Scope

This policy applies to all students, employees, contractors, visitors, and other individuals who access or use KCKCC Technology, Communication Systems, and Information, regardless of whether such access occurs on campus, remotely, or through a college-owned or personal device.

Definitions

Information technology resources refer to all College-provided or sponsored network access and services, including wired, wireless, remote, and on-campus access, and all associated hardware, computers, software systems, local and wide area networks, printers, data resources, peripherals, email accounts, messaging and teaching platforms, telephony services, internet and intranet services, and internal or external employee and student portals, as well as any College-related information accessed, created, stored, transmitted, received, or maintained by users through or on these resources, regardless of location or storage method, including information maintained on personal or web-based accounts when used for College business, such as student records, correspondence, documents, data files, reports, contracts, agreements, manuals, working papers, publications, communications, and operational software.

Policy Statement

Information technology and communication systems acquired, created, licensed, leased, or operated using College resources, including grant-funded and externally provided systems, are institutional assets governed by this policy and include computers, networks, software, data, communication systems, electronic mail, cloud services, peripherals, and Internet access. Access to these resources is a privilege granted to authorized users to support teaching, learning, research, administration, and institutional operations. It must comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws, as well as College policies and procedures. Acceptable use reflects academic integrity, ethical conduct, responsible stewardship of shared resources, respect for intellectual property, protection of institutional information, and respect for the rights of others.

To protect institutional operations and maintain system integrity, the College may monitor, access, manage, and secure technology resources and College information in accordance with established policy and procedure. Use of College technology resources constitutes acknowledgment of, and agreement to comply with this policy and related institutional requirements.

Violation of this policy or related procedures may result in the restriction or revocation of access privileges. It may subject the user to disciplinary action, including employment or academic sanctions, and to potential legal action, where applicable.
