Emergency Procedures

Injury

The safety of all members is the top priority at the Wellness & Fitness Center (WFC). Prompt reporting and adherence to these procedures help maintain a safe environment for all members of the WFC.

In the event of an injury, the following procedures must be followed:

  • Stop Exercise Immediately
    • Participants should cease all activity and avoid attempting to move if injured.
  • Notify Staff
    • A WFC professional staff member must be contacted immediately. First Aid supplies are available at the front desk and are administered at the discretion of the staff members on duty.
  • Emergency Response
    • For serious injuries, College Police and the College Nurse are notified. College Police determines if Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are required. Members have the option to decline EMS services once they arrive.
  • Accident Report
    • Every injured participant is required to complete a written accident report, even for minor injuries. Full cooperation with this process is necessary to ensure proper documentation and follow-up.

Fire

In the event of a fire, all occupants are required to follow these procedures to ensure safety:

  • Activate the Alarm and Notify Authorities
    • The nearest fire alarm station must be pulled immediately.
    • College Police should be contacted at 913-288-7636 to report the fire’s location and, if known, its cause.
  • Evacuate Immediately
    • All occupants must leave the building as soon as a fire alarm is activated, even if no visible signs of fire are present.
    • Elevators must not be used; stairwells or designated exits should be utilized.
    • Individuals should remain calm and assist others in safely exiting the building.
  • Contain the Fire (if safe to do so)
    • Doors and windows should be closed to help confine the fire.
    • Attempts to extinguish the fire should only be made by those properly trained and if it is safe to do so.
  • Take Personal Belongings
    • Essential items such as wallets, purses, keys, and cell phones may be taken.
    • Areas should be secured by closing and locking doors if normally done when leaving.
  • Move to a Safe Location
    • Evacuees must proceed to a safe distance from the building.
    • Evacuees should remain outside until emergency personnel declare the building safe and permit re-entry.
    • All instructions from emergency personnel and authorities must be followed.
  • Do Not Re-Enter
    • No one may return to the building until the “All Clear” is issued by emergency authorities.

Tornado

Safety is the top priority. Everyone should remain calm and assist others in getting shelter if needed. When the tornado alarm sounds, follow these safety procedures:

  • Seek Shelter
    • All occupants in the Health Professions Building are to proceed to the restrooms on the lower level.
    • Windows, glass doors, and exterior walls should be avoided.
  • Personal Belongings
    • Only essential items, such as wallets, purses, keys, and cellphones, should be taken.
    • Non-essential items should be left behind to ensure a quick and safe evacuation.
  • Secure the Area (if possible)
    • Doors should be closed behind occupants.
    • Doors should be locked if they would normally be secured when leaving the area.
  • Remain in Shelter
    • Occupants should remain in their designated shelter areas until it is declared safe to leave.
    • All instructions from emergency personnel and authorities must be followed.
  • All Clear
    • College Police announced an “All Clear” over the PA system once the tornado threat has passed.
    • Only after this announcement may occupants leave their sheltered areas.
