Your Visa Class
Students were issued a visa by the U.S. Consulate based on the information that they presented on their visa application and in the visa interview. Students were issued a specific visa that allows them to be lawfully present in the United States for the specific reason that was presented to the Consulate.
While in the United States, the U.S. federal government expects students to only engage in activities that are specific to their visa class, and NOT to engage in activities that are specific to a different visa class.
Maintaining a lawful presence/status in the United States is the student’s personal responsibility.
A Word of Caution About Your Lawful Status
When granted admission to the United States by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the Port of Entry (POE) to the U.S., students were given an Admission Stamp in their passport that lists the date they entered the U.S., and has their visa class written above the line as well as their Admit Until Date written below the line.
Students must depart the U.S. on or before the date indicated on the admission stamp in their passport. Failure to depart the U.S. on time will result in being out-of-status. Under U.S. law, visas of travelers who are out-of-status are automatically voided. Failure to depart the United States on time may also result in being ineligible to receive a visa to enter the U.S. in the future.
