The mission of the Fire Science program is to provide a venturous and progressive modern educational experience in all aspects of fire protection and safety, leading to a useful associate degree or specific educational endeavor for all students regardless of gender. The faculty is committed to provide learning experiences which are girded with 21st Century Learning Outcomes, especially targeted at critical thinking, communication, and core competencies. Kansas City Kansas Community College Fire Science program provides all necessary equipment for students to successfully train for and pass the State of Kansas Fire Service certifications.
Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations (HZMT 120), Firefighter I (FRSC 100), and Firefighter II (FRSC 211) are taught as a Fire Academy three days per week plus one weekend day per month. Students are required to maintain a 70% grade average in their courses in order to take their state certification examinations. Students must be 18 years of age and successfully pass the Interior Firefighting Training provided by the fire science program to qualify to take the State of Kansas Firefighter I certification tests.
