In order to qualify for the Military/Veteran tuition rate, military personnel, military dependents and veterans must provide evidence of military affiliation to the KCKCC Registrar’s Office.
- Documentation can include:
- DD214
- Military ID Card
- Veteran ID Card
- Dependent ID Card
Federal legislation known as the “Veterans’ Access to Care through Choice, Accountability, and Transparency Act of 2014,” requires all public universities and colleges to offer in-state tuition rates to veterans making use of Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits, who live in the state where the institution they intend to enroll at is located, and who file a letter of intent to establish residence in the state. Eligible spouses and dependent children also qualify for in-state tuition rates.
Submitting a Veterans Benefits Request Form initiates the VA Enrollment Certification for monetary benefits. If students do not submit a Veterans Benefit Request Form each semester, the VA is not informed of enrollment into KCKCC.
IMPORTANT: Students must submit a Veterans Benefit Request Form for VA benefits EVERY SEMESTER, and resubmit the form if any changes are made (i.e. add/drop classes).- Dropping a class: If students drop a class after the add/drop date, they must email the Military and Veterans Center with the name of the class(es) they are dropping and the reason. There may be financial implications associated with dropping class(es) after the add/drop date.
If students are using Chapter 33 Post 9/11 benefits, the VA pays tuition and fees directly to KCKCC. KCKCC defers the due date for the tuition and mandatory fees portion of their balance until AFTER students certify their classes. Students’ BAH and book stipend is paid directly to their bank account, which was created when they applied for benefits. Students need to pay KCKCC directly for any fees outside of tuition/mandatory fees such as meal plans, housing charges, transportation fees, etc., which is not certified for the VA Education Benefit.
If students are using Chapter 30, Chapter 1606 or Chapter 35 benefits, the VA ONLY pays a monthly stipend directly to their bank account, which they set up online. It is the student’s responsibility to pay KCKCC for their tuition and fees.
All students should complete the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA). FAFSA determines eligibility for Federal Student Loans as well as state and federal grants and is a requirement for many scholarships.
- Use the “IRS Data Retrieval Tool” to complete the application faster.
- Students must list KCKCC (Code: 001925) as the college they plan to attend.
- Be sure to have a Federal Student Aid ID and following the financial aid checklist.
The FAFSA opens October 1 each year. Students need to re-apply to FAFSA every October, and the sooner it is completed, the better in terms of funding availability. April 1 is the last date to complete FAFSA.
Types of assistance include Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Work-Study, and Federal Loans. A grant is money that the student does not have to pay back.
If students have attended any previous institutions or other college/university, those official transcripts must be sent to KCKCC Registrar Office in order to be applied towards a degree or certificate.
Transcripts from military experience can be requested through JST for Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corp, and Navy. Air Force transcripts can be requested through AF.
It is beneficial for students to have an idea of what courses are offered for the semester and be familiar with course times and locations. KCKCC offers courses on main campus (KC, KS), at the Dr. Thomas R. Burke Technical Education Center (TEC), at the Pioneer Career Center (Leavenworth, KS) and several class types.
The student and their advisor develop a schedule that best fits the student's academic needs.
Join the Student Veterans Organization (SVO), a registered student organization to support and promote veteran perspective on campus. Students can also find information about other KCKCC clubs and student organizations.
