Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) is proud to announce that a group of Upward Bound students traveled to Washington, D.C. for a week-long educational and cultural experience Oct. 24 to 28. This exciting trip exposed students to the nation’s rich history, prestigious universities and renowned cultural landmarks.
During their visit, the Upward Bound students had the opportunity to tour some of Washington, D.C.‘s most iconic monuments and museums, including the Lincoln Memorial, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, the Washington Monument and the U.S. Capitol. They visited the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the National Air and Space Museum and the National Zoo. A cruise on the Potomac River offered students a unique perspective on the city’s historic landscape.
As part of the program’s emphasis on higher education, students also embarked on college tours at four prominent institutions - Howard University, Morgan State University, Georgetown University and the University of the District of Columbia. These visits gave students a first-hand look at the academic programs, campus life and opportunities available at each university.
A highlight of the trip was Upward Bound’s visit to Arlington National Cemetery, where they honored the fallen at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. In a special ceremony, KCKCC’s Upward Bound Academy ROTC students dressed in uniform as they laid a wreath inscribed with “KCKCC Upward Bound Academy” at the tomb, paying their respects to those who have served.
“This trip is an incredible opportunity for our students to not only explore the history and culture of our nation’s capital but also to inspire their future academic and career paths,” said Veronica Knight, director of the Upward Bound Program at KCKCC. “We are especially proud of our ROTC students, who will have the honor of participating in such a meaningful ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.”
The KCKCC Upward Bound Program, designed to support first-generation and low-income students, offers a variety of services to prepare students for success in higher education. This trip to Washington, D.C. is one of many ways the program broadens students’ horizons and encourages their educational and personal growth.
