KCKCC to Unveil Newest Rita Blitt Sculptures

Posted on Monday, May 22, 2023

Kansas City Kansas Community College will soon be unveiling two new sculptures from artist Rita Blitt.

The double unveiling will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, May 25 on the KCKCC Main Campus, 7250 State Ave. The sculptures will be unveiled between the Jewell Building and the Learning Commons in the college courtyard. Guests are asked to park in the Continuing Education Building (CEB) parking lot on the east side of campus. From the State Ave. entrance, turn right on Campus Blvd, turn right on Delaware Dr., which is at the stop sign in front of the Mary Ann Flunders Lodge by the Lake. Turn left and take an immediate right turn on Bethel Lane, and then follow Bethel to the CEB parking lot. Once parked, follow the signs to the event.

Blitt is an international award-winning painter, sculptor and filmmaker, and her works have been featured in more than 70 solo exhibitions around the world. Her works have been in museums such as The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, the John F. Kennedy Library, the National Museum of Singapore and the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art, among many others. KCKCC currently has more than 140 of Rita’s paintings and drawings displayed at both the main campus and Dr. Thomas R. Burke Technical Education Center. KCKCC’s collection includes the sculpture “Ascension,” which was commissioned by the college in 2022 for its residence hall, Centennial Hall.

The first of the two sculptures is “Resilience.” Standing 16 feet tall, the sculpture is burnt orange and will be installed outside the Learning Commons Courtyard entrance. The second sculpture is “Perseverance.” This 14-foot-tall sculpture will feature the college’s trademark blue and be located by the pond outside the Jewell Building. Both sculptures were designed from Blitt’s original drawings created in 1993 and are organic shapes that peer toward the sky.
