KCKCC Volunteers Needed for Heart of America Stand Down Event

Posted on Tuesday, October 01, 2019

The Kansas City Kansas Community College Department of Military and Veteran Student Services (KCKCC Veterans Center) is looking for volunteers to support Kansas City’s homeless veterans during this year’s Heart of America Stand Down.

The event is from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 8 at Memorial Hall, 600 N. 7 St. in Kansas City, Kan. Volunteers will depart from the Jewell parking lot at 7 a.m. on the morning of the 8th to convoy to the event.

Heart of America Stand Down brings together numerous community service groups and organizations from the Kansas City area to provide assistance. This assistance helps rid the barriers that prevent homeless veterans from re-entering society as engaged, productive citizens, living fulfilling lives. These organizations offer assistance with medical, substance abuse, legal issues, taxes, housing and utility assistance, haircuts, family counseling, spiritual, mentorships, educational and employment opportunities.  Almost 500 veterans and dependents participated in the event last year.

If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please contact the Veterans Center at military@kckcc.edu or by calling 913-288-7594 by Oct. 25. Please provide your T-shirt size as all volunteers, who do not already have a Veterans Center t-shirt, will be given one. T-shirts can be picked up at the Veterans Center on Nov. 7 or picked up the day of the event.

In addition, the Veterans Center will be collecting donations of personnel hygiene items such as shaving cream, toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo and soap. Donations can be dropped off in the Veterans Center, located in Lower Jewell on the KCKCC Main Campus.
