The Administrative Office Professional (AOP) and Office Assistant (OA) programs offer three paths for earning certificates or a degree in the rewarding career of an Administrative Assistant. You can complete the OA certificate only 18-credit hours, or add 16 hours for the 34-hour AOP certificate. You can also earn an Associates of Applied Studies in AOP with 63 credit hours.
Classes are offered on ground at the Technical Education Center (TEC) in Kansas City, Kansas; the Pioneer Center in Leavenworth; and at the main campus. The program can also be completed online, or with a combination of on ground and online classes.
2.0 (C) overall grade point average must be achieved in all coursework and a 2.0 (C) or better in all business foundation and specialty courses.
Accreditation
The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) is the only organization offering specialized business accreditation for all degree levels, from associate to baccalaureate to doctoral degree programs. ACBSP accreditation certifies that the teaching and learning processes within the Business Department of Kansas City Kansas Community College meet the ACBSP established rigorous educational standards. ACBSP is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Programs in the Business Administrative Technology cluster are designed to give students a well-rounded preparation for a career in an office by providing the knowledge and skills necessary to adapt to a continuously changing administrative work environment. Administrative Office Professional - Certificate
Legal Administrative Assistant - Certificate
Students wishing to further their education may transfer their Office Assistant certificate to the AOP
Legal Administrative Assistant (LAA) certificate. This program will prepare students for a position as a legal administrative assistant in public and private business offices with educational content that includes learning legal terminology and legal research. The AOP LAA certificate may be seamlessly transferred into the AOP AAS degree, which can be completed by adding an additional twenty-nine credit hours.
Administrative Office Professional - Associate in Applied Science
This two-year program prepares students for an administrative office professional's position. Besides possessing a mastery of office skills, the administrative office professional must know about business organization and policies which are included in the course of study. Enrollees must complete one semester of on-the-job training. Students who have scored 500 or higher on the CAP® Exam may receive academic credit hours from KCKCC. Contact the Administrative Office Professionals Coordinator for more information. Any deviation from the program must be approved by the Dean of Math, Science, Business and Technology.
Since the transferability of courses will vary depending on the specific four-year institution, it is strongly recommended that if students are intending to transfer to a four-year institution, they consult with the transfer institution and with their respective KCKCC advisor before enrolling in order to determine the transferability of their courses. It is the student's responsibility to follow the transfer requirements established by his/her transfer institution.
Administrative Office Professional - Associate in Applied ScienceMicrosoft Certification
KCKCC students have the option to take a Microsoft Office certification exam for free (a $99 savings). Test are available in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook. Contact the AOP Coordinator, Kris Ball, for more details.
OPAC Certification
KCKCC OA and AOP students have the option to take OPAC (Office Proficiency Assessment & Certification) exams for free as evidence of their proficiency in office skills. Areas for testing include Windows, Office Suite, QuickBooks, Keyboarding, 10-Key, Filing, Proofreading, Bank Reconciliation, and others. Contact the AOP Coordinator, Kris Ball, for more details.
Earning Credits Through Nontraditional Studies
Life Experience Learning Program
This program is designed for students who have received formalized and/or individualized training in a non-collegiate setting. If the learning experience is commensurate with the student's educational goals and existing curricular guidelines, college credit may be granted. We do not grant credit for living or for work experience that cannot be translated into some type of academic learning. Contact Kris Ball for more details.
