Student Aid Index
What is the Student Aid Index (SAI)?
- The SAI is a number used to determine eligibility for need-based aid. It is calculated using information provided by the student (and contributors, if required) on the FAFSA form.
- A student’s SAI can be a negative number down to –1500 (negative 1,500).
- Important: A student’s aid eligibility is based on the following formula:
- Cost of Attendance (COA) – Student Aid Index (SAI) – Other Financial Assistance (OFA) = Need.
Determining Financial Need
Financial need is a student's calculated eligibility for financial assistance which is determined by subtracting the Student Aid Index (SAI) from the Cost of Attendance (COA).
Many types of financial aid are awarded on the basis of financial need including grants, loans, scholarships and federal work. Most federal student aid programs are awarded based on financial need except for Federal Direct Unsubsidized Student Loans.
