What Will I Learn?
Students interested in pursuing welding technology should have a close attention to detail, operations monitoring skills, production and processing skills among other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods. This program is designed to teach specific skills in all aspects of the welding trade, including blueprint reading, metallurgy, oxy-acetylene and semi-automatic cutting, brazing, and industry standard welding processes in a standard set of positions. Students learn welding processes to work with cast iron, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, and alloy metals.
Career Paths
With the shortage of welders due to the boomer generation retiring, the local unions and many other local companies have developed quality relationships with KCKCC to get students involved in various welding careers. The push to develop renewable energy sources, upgrading current power plants and creation of additional power plants, infrastructure projects, and other major construction projects create career opportunities for the student who is striving to become an expert welder.
This program opens opportunities to become machine operators, robot operators, spot welders, assembly line brazers, fabrication welders, maintenance welders, industrial machinery mechanics, structural metal fabricators and fitters. Further academic pursuits open opportunities in welding inspection, weld engineer, and weld supervisor.
Points of Pride
The KCKCC Welding program has a state-of-the-art facility, equipped with the latest technology, including advanced welders and two robotic welding cells. Wyandotte County is also a growing area with a high demand for welders.
In addition, there are apprenticeship opportunities with more than 10 skilled craft unions available through the Construction Apprenticeship Tech Prep Consortium for graduates.
Student Perspective
“It is more than just learning how to weld. It has been an eye-opening experience learning the entire aspect of welding fabrication.
