What Will I Learn?

The KCKCC Theatre program provides a solid foundation that includes theatre performance and technical production. The program focuses on teaching the art and craft of theatre as well as important soft skills of successful collaboration and the basics of working as an independent artist.

Graduates will have studied complete play production including the principles and skills of acting, the theatre space including a basic working knowledge of scenic construction and how all the elements interact to create excellent story telling through theatre.

Through this specific training, some of the broader learning outcomes include building well rounded artists with good collaboration, creative problem-solving abilities, motivation and commitment, the ability to work under pressure, time-budgeting skills, a healthy self-image and self-confidence as well as leadership skills and self-discipline.

Career Paths

A graduate from the KCKCC Theatre program will be able to transition easily into professional theatre opportunities whether performance or technical. Students will have knowledge of Kansas City theatre companies and some contacts from their time at the college.

The associate of arts in theatre degree is aligned with Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) articulation agreements and will be accepted at any Kansas Board of Regents university.

For students planning to continue their education, this degree is useful in more than just theatre-related careers. Law, medical health professions and counseling are several areas that this degree has proven to be desirable and useful.

Points of Pride

KCKCC's Theatre program works closely with working professionals, and they often reach out to us to help recommend a student for a professional or intern opportunity. With the program's close relationship with the Kansas City theatre community, many of the hiring staff are familiar with KCKCC students. Therefore, graduates will have had an introduction to the local Kansas City theatre network. Actors have also advanced to the regional finals of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Irene Ryan scholarship auditions, a prestigious honor in the theatre field, for the past two years.

The size of KCKCC's program offers excellent opportunities to be cast, direct, design or work on crew for shows immediately. Shows are selected with students in mind, giving them excellent performance and production opportunities.

Alum Perspective

“The most important thing I’ve learned here at KCKCC is that no one can ever reach perfection. No matter what you are doing or trying to accomplish, there is almost never a right answer. Especially within acting, there is no summit, no peak to someone’s ability, no right way to portray a character. You can always keep striving to better yourself. I wouldn't trade my last year and a half of study here at KCKCC for that time at any other institution. I truly wouldn't.”
