What Will I Learn?
Studying history gives students the skills to learn critical thinking and study skills that apply to all disciplines.
The KCKCC History program's mission is to introduce students to the study of change over time, the critical analysis of primary sources and be informed of United States and world history. Students will be better informed and aware of the complexity of the past and its continued influence upon the present.
A variety of classes are offered from Latin American history to modern United States history. Students don’t memorize facts or names, but engage with stories and people that shaped the ages of long ago. In class, students will read historical archives, reading the voices of historical actors from generations past. The history professors of KCKCC do not pour knowledge into students but ask students to learn together.
For students interested in bringing history out of the classroom and into the community, KCKCC offers plenty of Public History opportunities. Students in these projects will work in archives, conduct oral histories and shape projects such as moveable museum exhibits or interactive websites that engage with the history of the community.
Career Paths
The American Historical Association in its Careers for Students of History identifies seven careers in history - classrooms, museums, editing and publishing, archives, historic preservation, federal, state and local history and consultants and contractors.
The community college provides the foundation for students who intend to earn a baccalaureate degree and graduate degrees in history. Students who intend to teach in elementary and secondary schools should also satisfy requirements for certification.
Points of Pride
KCKCC's History program offers small class sizes, no books to buy and engaging classes. There are also opportunities to participate in public history projects.
