What Will I Learn?
Students pursuing this program should have a goal-oriented mindset, resilience, adaptability and a commitment to learning. They develop basic electrical skills, technical knowledge and related occupational information to prepare for initial employment in the electrical trade. Subjects to be learned include electrical safety, electrical math, basic electricity, electrical symbols and diagrams, Ohm’s law, direct and alternating current, basic single and three phase circuits, electrical meters, residential and commercial wiring, generators, motors, transformers, semiconductors materials, electrical troubleshooting, motor controls, basics of Programmable Logic Controls (PLC) and National Electrical Code (NEC).
Students are encouraged but not required to take the Journeymen’s Exam. The approximate cost of this exam is $100 and is not included with program tuition. All apprentice electricians are required to pass the written exam to become certified electricians.
Career Paths
Graduates can successfully seek employment in a variety of areas including as a residential electrician, commercial electrician, industrial electrician, controls electrical technician, sales associate in the electrical department of any hardware store or wholesale electric company, maintenance electrical technician, electronics technician, power plant electrical technician, utility company electrical technician and electrical equipment installer.
Students can also further their education and study to become an electrical engineer.
