Invited Speakers for the 2024 Undergraduate Student Research Symposium in the Psychological Sciences


Keynote Speaker: Dr. Cynthia de las Fuentes

Photo of Dr. Cynthia de las FuentesCynthia de las Fuentes, PhD, a Psychologist in Austin, Texas, known for her efforts to bring mental health services to Latinx immigrant populations, is the President -Elect (2024) of the American Psychological Association (2024).

An independent practitioner, de las Fuentes offers consultation, psychotherapy, and forensic evaluations in both English and Spanish. She provides expert testimony on the victims of hate crimes as well as racial, gender and sexual orientation discrimination, and she conducts immigration psychological evaluations. Her pro bono work includes training bilingual psychologists in her community on the culturally and linguistically competent delivery of forensic evaluation services to the Latinx immigrant community and delivering self-care and stress management workshops to immigration lawyers and their staff.

De las Fuentes is a founding member of National Latinx Psychological Association and was elected a member and secretary of the Board of Trustees for the Texas Psychological Association. In 2022, she was awarded Psychologist of the Year by the Texas Psychological Association, and in 2019, she received the National Latinx Psychological Association Distinguished Madrina Recognition for Outstanding Accomplishments.

The Invited Faculty Oral Presentation: Dr. Robyn Long

Photo of Dr. Robyn LongThe invited faculty address will be brought by Dr. Robyn Long of Baker University. She will be discussing her research on “What Psychology can teach us about building individual and community resilience in the face of climate change”.

A Licensed Psychologist and Professor of Psychology, Dr. Long is the Director of Baker University’s Study Abroad Program. Robyn has been at baker since 2011; and previously served as the Director of the Masters in Clinical Psychology Program at Emporia State University. Dr. Long did her graduate work and Doctoral studies at The University of Georgia.

“As a person, I've watched the impact of heat waves on my children’s sports involvement, and found myself and my students indoors more, impacted by wildfire smoke and air pollution. I have seen species loss impact the avocation of my spouse, an avid birder, and, as the daughter and granddaughter of farmers and passionate gardeners, seen their work become more and more challenging.”

Invited Student Oral Presentation: Ajay Lohr and Richard Yamamoto

The invited student address will be a discussion of research by two visually impaired students on the challenges and joys of being visually impaired in college.

Ajay is a major in Psychology. His goal is a doctorate in Clinical Psychology; Rich’s goal is to teach in High School. Both students are very active members of the KCKCC Student Senate. Rich is the Parliamentarian of the KCKCC Student Senate. Ajay is an active member of the KCKCC Christian Union (CRU) club.
