Andre Johnson’s reason for choosing KCKCC was simple – it offered the hands-on experience he needed.
“Construction is an exciting field to be in,” he said. “With the basic skills that I received from KCKCC, if helped me to become an apprentice in the Carpenters Union. And because of the union, I received a wage, insurance and a pension that helped me raise my family and retirement looks bright.”
Johnson attended the Advanced Vocational Technical School in Kansas City, Kansas, which later became what is now the Dr. Thomas R. Burke Technical Education Center. He completed two programs while he was there – auto body collision and repair and building trades. He is currently a member of the advisory committee for the Construction Tech Program and also helps place students in the Apprentice Program with the Mid-America Carpenters Regional Council.
“Attending KCKCC helped me to develop a work ethic and teach me the importance of showing up for work,” he said. “People should attend KCKCC because of the experience the instructors have in the fields they teach. One of my instructors, Glen Looney, helped a lot of inner-city kids with the basic skills. Without his patience and dedication, I would not be where I am today.”
