When Meagan Vestal started taking classes at KCKCC in 2018, she was a married woman in her 30s with two teenage sons. She was also managing her classwork while working full-time at Tonganoxie Middle School.
“I love being a student so much,” she said. “That love began and was fostered at KCKCC.”
A 2020 graduate, Vestal received an associate of science in liberal arts and was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society. But the learning and degrees didn’t stop after she left KCKCC. After receiving an associates degree, Vestal transferred to Ottawa University where she graduated summa cum lude with a bachelor's degree in English. She then became a Data Support Specialist at Tonganoxie USD 464 and enrolled in a graduate program at Pittsburg State University. She is on track to graduate this December with a master's degree in educational technology with a dual emphasis in technology integration specialist and library media specialist.
While at PSU, she was nominated to represent her department on the Graduate Student Advisory Council and elected to serve on the Academic Honesty Committee. She is also being inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society in April. After completing her degree, Vestal plans to earn a second master’s degree in English, so that in the future, she can teach English at the collegiate level.
“My time at KCKCC taught me how to be a better student and how to be successful in my academic journey,” she said. “Because of my experiences there, I now have a lifelong love of learning, an amazing career and have shown my sons that it is never too late to chase your dreams and achieve your goals. I am forever proud to be a Blue Devil and am overjoyed that my oldest son is following in my footsteps and begins at KCKCC this fall.”
