Dr. Clait E. Braun has had a long career in agriculture and wildlife, writing multiple books, working with the Colorado Division of Wildlife for more than 30 years and completing extensive research of Sage-Grouse. But it was at Kansas City Kansas Junior College, now known as KCKCC, where he gained the confidence that he could do well in his academic studies.
“Two teachers (Iden Reese and Bessie Cannon) knew how to stimulate me to do my best. They gave me the confidence that I could make it through college and were important to my development,” he said. “I have been lucky and opened the correct door given the opportunity. Plus, I am a survivor and had the opportunity to work with some bright highly motived people.”
Following his graduation from KCKJC in 1959, Braun earned his bachelor of science in technical agronomy from Kansas State University and then a master of science in forest wildlife management from the University of Montana. He also earned his doctorate in wildlife biology from Colorado State University. He has worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in both Kansas and Montana as well as the Montana Department of Fish and Game. His research of Sage-Grouse, a type of bird that lives in the western United States and southern Canada, even led him to discover the Gunnison Sage-Grouse in 1977.
Braun is not the only member of his family to attend KCKCC. His mother, three brothers and uncle all attended the college at various times.
“My mother wanted me to start college locally,” he said of his reason for attending KCKJC. “My advice to students is to have a plan. Do not hesitate to broaden your learning opportunities. Do not be afraid to explore outside of your plan.”
