DIVERSITY OF CIRCLE

Artist James Mirick Inclusiveness - incorporating broad representation of diversity to include race, class, ethnicity, gender, disability, age sexual orientation, religion, and national origin.

Shared Responsibility - espousing the belief that every unit, organization, and member of the campus community has responsibility to make the campus welcoming.

Institutionalization - ensuring those diversity efforts are permanently incorporated into the institutional fabric of KCKCC.

Accountability - identifying a process for determining and monitoring the responsibility for meeting campus needs

Evaluation - soliciting on-going feedback about program impact and campus climate.

Mission and Purpose

Serves the needs of International and Multicultural Education.

Designed to provide students, faculty, staff, and local communities with an enriched environment that celebrates the cultural contributions of our diverse populations.

Fosters greater cultural interaction, understanding, and education.

Provides cultural events, activities, speakers, and training programs that enhance relationships and campus spirit.

The Intercultural Center has an Intercultural Council that guides the educational programming and serves as advocates for educational understanding and appreciation.

History

The Intercultural Center was created following years of research and work completed by the Task Force for Intercultural Education in 1990. For Kansas City Kansas Community College our local communities represent a microcosm of our larger society. The college has a unique role to play in the enhancement of our campus and the development of student leaders. As the college's population becomes more diverse the college must be prepared to respond to this diversity in positive ways.

BOT Policy

Board of Trustees Policy on the Enhancement of Positive Human Relations

Essential to the purpose and mission of Kansas City Kansas Community College is the enhancement of positive human relations within the institution. Discriminatory attitudes and behaviors, whether intentional or unintentional, reduce this College's effectiveness. The Board of Trustees of KCKCC affirms its responsibility to maintain a harassment-free campus environment. Any employee or student that exhibits or participates in deliberate or unwitting behaviors that are offensive or discriminatory to individuals with reference to their race, gender, age, ethnicity, national origin or disability will be subject to disciplinary action which may result in suspension or dismissal from the institution.

Advisory Council

Mission

The Advisory Council of the Intercultural Center (ACIC) is comprised of active members of the community who act as liaisons between the college Intercultural Center (ICC) and the community, attending functions of the school and making recommendations to the ICC on how to better serve our diverse populations.

Goals and Objectives

The Goals of the ACIC are to help cultivate links between the college Intercultural Center and the community to foster greater understanding and appreciation for the diverse student populations and communities we serve. More specifically, the ACIC will advise the ICC in its pursuits to advance the following areas:

  • Enhance community image,
  • Improve products and services,
  • Be an employer of choice,
  • Increase student enrollment.

The ACIC will do so by:

  • Inviting open communication between community members / groups and ICC.
  • Encouraging community members / groups to participate in college cultural functions.
  • Notifying the ICC of community events of interest to the college.

Roles and Responsibilities

Members of the ACIC serve the ICC in an advisory capacity.

Members commit to at least one year of service. There will be four full council meetings, one per quarter and smaller committee meetings as needed.
