FAQ
Enrollment is largely on-going. We begin November 1, 2011 for Spring 2012 classes and April 1, 2012 for Summer and Fall 2012 classes. There are brief periods where enrollment is paused to allow processing in the computer system. The Academic Calendar only lists “official” enrollment periods, you should contact the Advising and Counseling Office at 913 288 7696 to determine exact dates.
If you’re confident of what you need to take, use WebAdvisor, our online student management system. Here is a link to the “how to” videos that will walk you through the process. http://www.kckcc.edu/helpvideos Be aware that if you have credits from another college or university, or are a first time student, you might have difficulty. The system will not always understand that you have met the prerequisites. In addition, if you are enrolled in a class and want to take the next class in a sequence, then you will need to have an advisor or counselor enroll you.
If you are in a career program, then make an appointment and meet with the career program coordinator to select your classes and enroll.
If you would like to meet with an academic advisor or counselor, you can do that by appointment or on a walk-in basis in the Student Center located in Upper Jewell. To schedule an appointment or learn the walk-in hours, call 913-288-7696.
Academic probation occurs when your GPA drops below a certain level. Academic probation will limit the number of hours you are allowed to enroll in, until the GPA comes back up above the required level. See the chart below. The grade point average is cumulative and will include any hours that you transfer to KCKCC. If your GPA falls below probation level, you will be dismissed for one term and must petition for re-instatement. Academic probation can also impact your ability to receive financial aid. Students on probation are limited to no more than 9 hours in a semester, 6 in the summer term and 6 if only enrolling in mid-term classes. Your advisor/counselor will often recommend no more than 6 hours when you’re on probation. You also need to consider that if you have financial aid and are on probation, financial aid allows only 6 credit hours. New federal Financial Aid regulations require a 2.0 GPA to continue to receive assistance.

Your grade point average is your academic reputation. You must have a minimum 2.0 in order to graduate from KCKCC. Equally as important is that many programs you might wish to enter are “competitive admission” programs. That means that you must compete against other students for a limited number of seats. GPA is often the deciding factor for admission. For example, KCKCC requires a 2.75 minimum GPA for admission to the nursing program, but that doesn’t mean you’ll get in if everyone who is applying when you do has a 3.2. This is true of not only our programs, but also programs at four-year colleges or universities. Specialized programs like allied health, pharmacy, dentistry, medicine, and engineering all have extremely competitive admissions standards. Here’s an easy GPA calculator. http://www.college-scholarships.com/online_college_gpa_calculator.htm
Backwards; identify the program you wish to attend at a four-year school, and then plan to take the equivalent general education courses at KCKCC. Colleges often have degree plans or checklists on their webpages that indicate the core curriculum necessary for completion. You can then research the equivalencies between KCKCC courses and the courses at the university. You often find those listed under “transfer equivalencies” or “articulation agreements”. Here are some other resources you might find useful. http://www.kckcc.edu/services/studentServices/counselingAndAdvisingCenter/creditTransferEquivalencySystems.aspx
A 2 + 2 is a special type of articulation that is specific to a program. They specify two years of curriculum at KCKCC and then two more years to be completed at the four-year institution. We have two different Bachelor’s completion, 2 + 2 programs, on our campus. They are the University Of Kansas Bachelor Of Social Work and Emporia State University’s Elementary Education. It may take one additional class in each program to achieve the Associate in Arts in Liberal Arts from KCKCC.
Generally speaking, our Associate in Arts in Liberal Arts or Associate in Science in Liberal Arts are the most transferable degrees that we offer. Freshman/Sophomore classes are standard in many areas. However, if you are going into a specialized field, like engineering, pharmacy or the allied health professions, the degree is customized so that all of your elective hours are in math/science. Students can be comfortable taking ENGL 101 and ENGL 102, SPCH 151, 2 humanities classes, 2 social science classes, 2 laboratory science classes from two different areas and college algebra. Be aware that developmental classes, anything numbered below 100, will not transfer and do not apply towards any KCKCC degree or certificate. In addition, be aware that some four-year schools may not accept TEC hours toward a degree. If you are in a TEC program and wish to transfer to a four-year school, consult EARLY with an academic advisor.
Some services require more time. In order to ensure that you have the time and attention that you need, we require appointments for degree checks, personal counseling, academic forgiveness/renewal and financial aid exclusions. We also suggest them for new students and transfer students with hours from more than one other college. Enrollment and general advising can be done on a walk-in basis.
You should bring Accuplacer scores if you are brand new to us or have not completed an English or math class as a transfer student. You should bring copies of transcripts from ALL other colleges attended unless you have determined that your transfer transcripts are on file here. If you have questions for us, write them down so you are less likely to forget something important.
Like almost everything else in life, there are specific times by which certain activities or forms must be completed. Missing a deadline is one of the problems students run into most often. You should keep an updated calendar with dates and deadlines for the semester.
Be sure to check http://www.kckcc.edu/academics/academicCalendars, the academic calendar, rather than making assumptions or just asking your friends. Here are just some examples of activities to which deadlines apply:
- Registering for, adding, dropping, or withdrawing from classes
- Applying for graduation
- Appealing a grade
- Completing a course in which an incomplete grade is assigned
- Applying for financial aid
- Paying fees
- Refunds for dropped classes
- Applying to competitive admissions programs
