Workplace Demands

  • Have basic competencies in reading, writing and math skills. (This means the ability to read and interpret complex materials and instructions.

  • Be able to scan materials and pick up important and relevant information.

  • Be able to write at a skill level that will communicate ideas and arrangements quickly and effectively.

  • Be able to prepare business documents that are clear, concise, accurate, specific, logical, and easy for readers to read and understand.

  • Be able to perform conceptual math problems. It is NOT SO IMPORTANT to be able to add large columns of numbers as it is to BE ABLE TO SCAN computer generated results and to understand how the computational routine arrived as those results. (This means higher order of math including business statistics.)

  • Have excellent communicational skills - verbal, written, and listening. Workers will be members of teams. Much of the value of teams stems from the increased communication between members sharing information and ideas. Workers of the future must be good communicators. They must have the skills to express their ideas and convey information to others quickly and effectively. They must be good, active listeners, since much of the information they require to perform their jobs, solve problems, and work effectively with others will come from "team members."
