Developmental Reading
  • A Kurzweil software application was purchased for use in Reading 091. Kurzweil enables instructors to infuse technology into the classroom. The program was first piloted in Fall 2005.
  • A Smart Classroom for reading was installed in room 2614 for use beginning in Fall 2005.
Developmental Math
  • Three distinct math pilots were offered for students in 2006-07.Pilot courses included:1) late start sections of Math Essentials and Elementary Algebra, 2) infusion of math learning strategies into Math Essentials and Elementary Algebra, and 3) establishment of a reading prerequisite in Elementary Algebra.
  • Implementation of a flexible learning system that incorporates various aspects of the 2006-07 pilots began in fall 2007.
  • Professional development sessions have been offered to full-time and adjunct math instructors.
Developmental Writing
  • Inspiration software was purchased for the pre-composition pilot courses.The software allows students to visualize the writing process.
Bridge Programs and GED Bridge Programs
  • A learning community comprised of College Reading, Pre-Composition, and Strategies for Academic Excellence was developed to enhance success of developmental students by providing a built-in student support network and integrating course content.
  • A Strategies for Academic Excellence course is being piloted with StrengthsQuest.StrengthsQuest is a talent-development program that helps students achieve academic, career, and personal success by emphasizing strengths.
Summer Institute
  • During summer 2006, a summer institute will provide training for faculty members in techniques for engaging students by integrating technology and alternative instructional design.
Kellogg Institute
  • During summer 2006, Title III will sponsor attendance at the Kellogg Institute. The National Center for Developmental Education hosts an intensive four-week summer residency at Appalachian State University which continues into a supervised practicum following the residency carried out at the participant’s home campus. All work leads toward Development Education certification.
Instructional Resources
  • A comprehensive collection of web-based resources has been compiled and will be housed on the Faculty & Staff Development webpage. These resources provide information on enhancing student success.
Technology Integration
  • Smart room technology has been installed in several classrooms to support Title III initiatives.
  • Various software programs, including Kurzweil & Inspiration, have been purchased to enhance student learning.
Learning Communities
  • Title III staff are involved in this initiative which is currently under the leadership of a group of faculty members. Financial support will be provided for two or more faculty and staff members to attend a learning community conference at Evergreen State.
New Student Orientation
  • KCKCC began hosting new student orientations for the 2005-06 academic year. These sessions give new students the opportunity to learn about several of the college’s academic and student support programs. A separate session addresses issues raised by family members.
Faculty Access System
  • The Faculty Access Module, a web-based course management and advising system, was purchased and installed. Training sessions were provided to acquaint staff and faculty with the system.
Academic Planners
  • Student planners containing a calendar and college resource guide are available to all KCKCC students. Planners are available at the information desk in the Jewell Center.
Advising Pilot
  • An early alert/referral system is being developed for use by faculty and staff. The system will provide academic and other support systems for students.
GED Bridge Programs
  • A learning community comprised of College Reading, Pre-Composition, and Strategies for Academic Excellence was developed to enhance success of developmental students by providing a built-in student support network and integrating course content.

Tutoring
  • An interactive tutor training program is being piloted.Tutor training is an important part of the College Reading & Learning Association’s tutor certification program.
  • An e-consult program is being developed to assist students with writing.
  • Accutrack, a tutor tracking program, was purchased and will be used to track tutoring appointments and monitor student progress.
