#22 Brandon Ward
Bouncing back from a 73-71 setback in the opening round of the North Ark Classic, Kansas City Kansas Community College’s young Blue Devils knocked off North Arkansas 84-72 Saturday behind the 36-point scoring of Brandon Ward.
The win sets up the Blue Devils’ only remaining home game of the first semester Tuesday against Allen County at 7 p.m. following an Allen-KCKCC women’s matchup at 5 p.m.
A 6-3 transfer from Highland Community College in Freeport, Ill., Ward was 12 of 18 from the field including 8 of 13 from 3-point in scoring a career high 36 points. Ward also had a team high four assists and five rebounds.
“Brandon played real well and Stephen Leimbach also shot the ball well,” said KCKCC coach Kelly Newton. Leimbach added 15 points, all on 3-point shots, and led the Blue Devils in rebounds with six.
Mid-South Community College of West Memphis, Mo., took advantage of four missed free throws and two KCKCC turnovers to rally from a 4-point deficit in the final 1:20 for a 73-71 win on Friday.
The Blue Devils, who are without their only returning starter, Antonio Winn, sidelined for the season with a leg injury, had come from a 39-36 halftime deficit to lead by four heading into the final minute. Ward again led the way with 21 points while Lansing freshman Clay Young added a career high 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting, five rebounds and three assists. Lucas Smith was also in double figures with 13 points and Nate Collins contributed nine. Ward led rebounding with six and Smith and Collins chipped in with five each.
