The African American Student Union (TAASU) at Kansas City Kansas Community College is making preparations to celebrate Black History month with several events.

These events include:

Feb. 21 – HBCU/NPHC Day/Screening of “School Daze”
TAASU pays tribute to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and the important role they have played in providing educations to Blacks (and now all) students, especially during a time when Blacks were openly denied access to education. TAASU will also honor the fraternities and sororities of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC-Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Beta Sigma, Zeta Phi Beta, Sigma Gamma Rho and Iota Phi Theta) for their rich legacy in the community and world of education. Alumni from HBCUs and/or members of these Greek Letter organizations are encouraged to represent their alma maters or organizations. This is a great opportunity for thinking about transferring to four year schools to learn more about the HBCU options.

In addition, TAASU will sponsor a screening of the iconic Spike Lee film, “School Daze.” The screening will be shown at 11:30 a.m. in the Intercultural Center. This film portrays life at an HBCU while examining the inner dynamics of race within the Black community. Light refreshments will be provided.

Feb. 25 – Health Screenings
African Americans are affected at highly disproportionate rates by heart disease and diabetes among other diseases. Often African Americans are not even aware that they have these conditions. TAASU, along with the KCKCC Student Health office, will do glucose and blood pressure screenings in the Lower Level Jewell area. Information about healthy living will be provided as well as healthy snacks.

March 27 – Big XII Leadership Conference on Black Student Government
A delegation of TAASU students will represent the college at the Big XII Leadership Conference at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.
