STEP 5: Housing Options

You should plan on arriving in Kansas City at least a week or two before classes start, in order to find suitable living accommodations and to make necessary rental and transportation arrangements.

Off-Campus housing options include:

  • Rooms and private residences
  • Apartments/town homes/condominiums which can be rented by yourself or shared by multiple students depending on the lease options of the apartment complex. It is reasonable to expect off-campus housing to cost between $450 to $800 per month, depending on the number of people sharing the expenses which include monthly rent and utilities (water, phone, electricity, gas, trash, cable, etc.) A security deposit (usually one month’s rent) is also required for most off-campus housing. In addition. Utility companies (phone, electricity, etc.) may require a deposit in advance as well.

You may also search Internet-based apartment engines such as www.rent.net or www.aparmentguide.com or the classified advertising section of the Kansas City Star, local newspaper at www.kcstar.com

To rent an apartment, it is customary that you sign a lease. A lease is a binding contract, and is required for a fixed period, typically 12 months. Leases obligate you to pay rent for the term of the lease even if you move out of the apartment. Please read and understand the lease before you sign it. Electrical Devices/Appliances: the electrical current used for small appliances in the U.S. is 100-115 volts, 60 cycles. If you plan to bring appliances, appropriate adapters/transformers may be required.
