Mandatory Evaluation and Mandatory Placement were adopted by the Kansas City Kansas Board of Trustees on June 12, 2001. First-time college students who have taken the ACT or SAT within the last 24 months may be exempt from taking the placement evaluation in Reading and Writing if their score is ACT 23/SAT 575 in Reading and English. First-time college students who have taken the ACT or SAT within the last 24 months may be exempt from taking the placement evaluation in Math if their score is ACT 23/SAT 575 or higher in math.
  1. Every first time college student will take the required placement1 evaluation.
    First time college students include:
    • On campus
    • Online
    • Leavenworth Center
    • Technical Education Center
    • High school partnership/concurrent enrollments
    Exceptions are students enrolling:
    • Only in Wellness
    • Only in a physical activity class from the exercise science curriculum
    • Only in contract agreement with KCKCC
    • OR
    • Those students who have earned a two-year or higher degree and whose study included math and English from an accredited post-secondary institution
  2. Advisors use placement scores2 in advising all students.
  3. The Admissions Office will only process enrollments3 for first-time students with placement scores or those who meet the above exceptions.

1: Placement includes three tests: reading, writing, and mathematics. ESOL placement tests are given when TOEFL scores warrant or English language proficiency indicates. Placement scores become part of each student record.

2: The system will check students who were not placed correctly based on their scores, and/or students who have not successfully completed the course(s) required by placement. These students will return to their advisor.

3: The system will check students who do not have placement scores on file.

COMPASS Exam: Range Of Scores And Guidelines

For First-Time College Students enrolling In English And/Or Math
0 to 34 Enrollment in the Adult Education offered by Continuing Education.
 
35 to 55 Enrollment in READ0091 is required.
Students must select classes from the approved list of courses for READ0091. They should not enroll in more than 12 semester hours (6 in summer). Students should see a developmental advising specialist and/or their developmental instructor for enrollment.
 
56 to 72 Enrollment in READ0092 is required.
Although students are encouraged to select classes from the approved list of courses for READ0091, they are not required to do so. Students should not enroll in more than 12 semester hours (6 in summer). Students should see a developmental advising specialist and/or their developmental instructor for enrollment.
 
73 to 100 College level and above. No reading class is required.

Adult Education

First time college students testing below 35 on the COMPASS Reading comprehension test should enroll in the On TRACK Program through continuing Education.

ESL students testing into the following score ranges should enroll in the Adult Education On TRACK ESOL program through Continuing Education

COMPASS ESL Reading score between 1 & 37

COMPASS ESL Grammar/Usage score between 1 & 41

COMPASS ESL Listening score between 1 & 41

Approved Courses for Students Who Test Below 73 on the Reading Test

Students who test into READ0091 (35 to 55) must select classes from this list. 

Students who test into READ0092 (56 to 72) are encouraged to select classes from this list, but are not required to do so. READ0091 and READ0092 students should not enroll in more than 12 credit hours (6 during Summer)

Writing Skills

Students must take the reading test with the sentence skills test to qualify for Composition I.

0 to 44 Enrollment in ENGL0099 (Pre-Composition) is required. Student may not in enroll in Composition I at this time.
45-100 If reading test score is below 73, student must enroll in Pre-Composition and may not enroll in Composition I at this time.

If reading test score is 73 or above, student may enroll directly in Composition I.

Math Skills

These math scores are to be used for placement in math classes only for first-time college students or students who have never taken a math class at any college.
