To provide a venturous and progressive modern educational experience in all aspects of fire protection and safety, leading to a useful associate degree or specific educational endeavor for all students regardless of gender. The faculty is committed to provide learning experiences which are girdled with 21st Century Learning Outcomes, especially targeted at critical thinking, the community, communication and information management core competencies.

Students develop entry-level skills for firefighting in this program. Students learn to effectively use the same mental approach or action plan for all types of fires. The program stresses leadership with a venturesome and progressive approach to applying principles of management - particularly those related to modern concepts of leadership, discipline, morale, and command. The goal is to develop decision-making skills that result in more effective firefighting and management.

General Education Requirements

College Requirement
- All first time degree-seeking students who score 75 or above on the ACCUPLACER reading exam are required to take HUDV0100, Freshman Orientation (1 credit hour). All degree-seeking students who score below 75 on the ACCUPLACER reading exam will take HUDV 101, Strategies for Academic Excellence/Lifelong Learning (2 credit hours). (See exemptions)

*Keep the following in mind when selecting electives: a minimum of 15 hours must be taken at this institution to be awarded this degree. EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) counts toward 8 hours credit in Fire Science with state certification. Courses taken at the U.S. Fire Administration for college credit are allowed for a maximum of 8 hours credit. Fire Academy Students who attend on-site, or approved for credit off-site, Fire Science courses at the National Emergency Training Center (Emmitsburg, Maryland) are eligible for credit. The maximum number of credit hours allowed towards a degree is eight hours. An official transcript must be sent to the KCKCC Admissions Office from the National Emergency Training Center. Copies of certificates, reproduced transcripts, or copies of records of attendance are not accepted in place of official documentation. Credit hours are equated at the rate of two days contact at the Center for one hour credit at KCKCC.
