Biology Course Descriptions

Dean:  Dr. Hasan Naima

Advisor:  Ernie May

The mission of the Biology Department is to offer a superior postsecondary education in biological science. The structures of the program allows students substantial freedom and instill in our students a profound appreciation for the study of life, to enhance scientific literacy, to promote a desire for continued acquisition of scientific knowledge, and to provide the skills necessary to pursue professional positions, independent learning, and research. The laboratory experiences offered by the department require that students develop competence in the use of modern biological techniques, and in the analysis, interpretation and presentation of data.  Our students should be proficient in written and oral communication, and they should have a sound background in a variety of modern biological techniques that will make them adaptable to a myriad of professional positions. Our students should be able to independently develop and conduct research and to disseminate information through a wide array of sources. Our faculty members are active scholars who are current in their respective fields of specialty. We will continually strive to update our academic program as required to reflect the changing needs of society, the scientific community, and professional positions currently available. KCKCC overall mission is providing courses for students of all majors, allowing them to better understand the physical universe, participate as concerned, intelligent citizens, and appreciate appropriate uses of technology.  Additionally, courses are offered that provide nursing and other paramedical students with strong foundations that allow them to enter their advanced program-specific courses. Furthermore, we will continually assess our academic program to ensure that it is fulfilling the needs of our students and the community.

Curriculum pathway leading to an Associate in Science in Liberal Arts & Sciences for students seeking a transfer degree to a 4-year institution.

Since the transferability of courses will vary depending on the specific four-year institution, it is strongly recommended that if students are intending to transfer to four-year institutions, they must consult with the transfer institution and with their respective KCKCC advisors before enrolling in order to determine the transferability of their courses. It is the student’s responsibility to determine the transferability of his/her courses.
