Associate in Applied Science
Audio Engineering
MCC Agreement Course Descriptions
Dean of Humanities & Fine Arts/Acting Associate Provost of Academic Affairs: Dr. Tamara Agha-Jaffar
Coordinator: Dr. Ian Corbett
The goal of the Audio Engineering Program is to prepare our students for an entry level engineering position in the varied fields of the audio industry and/or to enable them to transfer to a 4-year degree in a related field. We emphasize hands-on experiential training on audio technologies and equipment used in the recording studio environment, while assuring students also understand essential audio theory and have training in and an understanding of traditional musical skills and concepts. Our curriculum produces a versatile audio professional, prepared with the necessary skills and knowledge that will enable him/her to transition to work in variety of audio industry fields; to communicate with musicians in a recording studio or live sound environment; and to work in a non-musical audio field, for example broadcasting and corporate sound.
The Audio Engineering facilities at KCKCC include three state-of-the-art recording/mixing studios, a computer/MIDI lab, and an impressive live sound reinforcement system. Our facilities are open on evenings and weekends to allow students to work on school projects.
Students frequently transfer to 4-year degree programs in related fields, and we have transfer and articulation agreements in place with several universities. Our students are employed both locally and nationally at live music venues, churches, and recording studios; with music retailers; at television and radio stations; telecommunications companies; and music business and administration companies. They have also created entrepreneurial companies that address the needs of niche markets in the audio industry.
In 2006, our students created an official Student Chapter of the Audio Engineering Society on campus. The program faculty consists of active professionals in the recording and sound reinforcement industry.
Since the transferability of courses will vary depending on the specific four-year institution, it is strongly recommended that if students are intending to transfer to four-year institutions, they must consult with the transfer institution and with their respective KCKCC advisors before enrolling in order to determine the transferability of their courses. It is the student’s responsibility to determine the transferability of his/her courses.
