Fire Medic

Associate in Applied Science Degree

Dean:  Dr. Shirley Wendel

Program Coordinator:  VACANT

Technical Assistant EMS Program:  VACANT

Since the transferability of courses will vary depending on the specific four-year institution, it is strongly recommended that if students are intending to transfer to a four-year institution, they must consult with the transfer institution and with their respective KCKCC advisor before enrolling in order to determine the transferability of their courses. It is the student's responsibility to follow the transfer requirements established by his/her transfer institution.

A paramedic is a highly trained healthcare provider who can operate in many environments but most often is seen in the pre-hospital setting. They are educated and trained to act as the eyes and ears of physicians. They perform a variety of functions. In order to perform those functions, they must receive specialized education in many areas including emergency cardiology, pulmonology, neurology, childbirth, toxicology, and response to weapons of mass destruction. A fire medic has all of the same education but also has basic firefighter training.

The Paramedic program is designed to prepare individuals to successfully fulfill the responsibilities of an independently functioning paramedic. The program will provide students with opportunities to gain information, skills, and attitudes necessary to perform the above duties in a safe and competent manner. Stringent adherence to state-mandated regulations is required. Activities in the program help students to achieve the 21st Century outcomes of communication, computation, community service and learning, critical thinking/problem solving, and interpersonal learning.

Participants in the program are expected to develop competencies in cognitive skills, psychomotor skills, and in the affective domain.

Cognitive Competencies
Upon successful completion of the program the participant will demonstrate the ability to comprehend, apply, and evaluate the clinical information relative to his/her role as an entry level paramedic.

Psychomotor Competencies
Upon successful completion of the program the participant will demonstrate technical proficiency in all skills necessary to fulfill the role of the entry level paramedic.

Affective Competencies
Upon successful completion of the program the participant will demonstrate personal behaviors and attitudes consistent with the professional and employer expectations and standards for entry level paramedics, recognizing each patient as a unique and valued member of society.

Program Description
The paramedic program will incorporate a variety of teaching strategies and learning opportunities for participants including but not limited to: lectures, skill training sessions, demonstrations, simulated patient scenarios, hospital clinical experiences, field internship experiences, and computer-enhanced activities. The purpose of the program is to provide the participant with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively function as a certified paramedic.
