General Education Core Competencies

The following General Education Core Competencies have been developed by Kansas City Kansas Community College faculty. All students are expected to be proficient in the following areas before the degree is awarded.

Communication Core Competency - The student will have the ability to express, interpret, and modify ideas/information effectively (both written and oral) within a variety of settings, but not limited to

  1. reading text accurately and critically,
  2. writing with a clear purpose and effective organization,
  3. speaking effectively using appropriate styles that suit the message, purpose, and context.
  4. employing active listening techniques.

Computation Core Competency - The student will have the ability to understand and apply mathematical concepts and reasoning and to analyze and use numerical data.

Community Core Competency - The student will have the ability to be an independent lifelong learner and to demonstrate an awareness of the world in citizenship; diversity/pluralism; local, community, global, environmental awareness.

Critical Thinking Core Competency - The student will have the ability to use data to make complex decisions utilizing analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and critical thinking skills.

Information Management Competency - The student will have the ability to collect, analyze, and organize information from a variety of sources.

Interpersonal Learning Competency - The student will have the ability to work in teams, manage relationships, resolve conflicts, and demonstrate successful workplace skills.

Personal Learning Competency - The student will have the ability to understand and manage self, manage change, demonstrate the knowledge and ability to be a lifelong learner, be personally responsible, aesthetically responsive, and be able to develop a lifelong wellness program.

Technology Competency - The student will be computer literate, have internet skills, and will be able to retrieve and manage information using appropriate technology.
