Peer Tutor Job Description


Position Title: Peer Tutor
(Academic Resource Center)
Reports to: Assistant Director

  1. Narrative General Description

    Reporting directly to the Assistant Director, the Peer Tutor shall be responsible for providing academic assistance to students in select coursework.

  2. Functional Responsibilities

    1. Complete tutor training requirements.
      (Attend tutoring training sessions, and/or watch training tapes.)

    2. Establish contact with assigned students and arrange regularly scheduled tutoring sessions.

    3. Make a determination as to the most effective method of providing assistance to the tutee, and implement that plan.

    4. Maintain current records of tutoring activities. (Timesheets & Progress Reports)

    5. Establish contact with the tutee's instructor, when necessary.

    6. Inform Assistant Director of potential problems.

    7. Develop supportive peer-relationships with tutees.

    8. Assist students in developing Study Skills.

    9. Perform other duties as assigned.

  3. Consulting Tasks

    1. Consult with faculty concerning tutees lack of progress, when appropriate, and request suggestions for methods of providing assistance to the tutee.
    2. Consult with ARC staff for assistance with unique student situations.
      (For example, how to communicate with a deaf student.)

  4. Required knowledge, skills and personal qualifications

    1. Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds as well as under-prepared and special needs students.

    2. Ability to provide content area assistance. (Good knowledge of course material)

    3. Ability to provide some assistance with test-taking strategies, note taking skills, and time management.

    4. Ability to work with other tutors, faculty and staff.

    5. Ability to work with two or more tutees in a tutoring session.

  5. Required Educational Background

    1. Must have successfully completed the course to be tutored with a final grade of "A" or "B." If currently enrolled, must maintain an "A" or "B" average.

    2. Must secure written recommendation by the course instructor.
