"I loved history as a kid, and sometime in high school I decided to become a history teacher.
I try to emphasize in class that the study of history requires the kinds of thinking that can benefit all of us, not only historians. I also like to encourage my students to discover what they like about the study of the past because so many of us are influenced to believe that history is boring and irrelevant. For you and me to ignore or to dismiss history as a way of thinking is to make a choice that has life-long consequences. And, collectively, couldn't we who live in the land of American dreams benefit from a big dose of historical literacy?"
