“Millennial Goals towards Igbo Manifest Destiny”

January 3, 2008

Talented Ndigbo,

The Nigerian condition today has become too dangerous for Igbo academics and intellectuals worldwide to continue to remain silent. Igbo children face uncertain future in a prebendal, political system which does not secure their right to life, liberty, equality, justice and happiness. For how long do we abandon our manifest destiny into the hands of the political otapiapia - an elitist political machine that squanders the national wealth like the anthills of the savannah? Ndigbo have been excluded from the Nigerian amalgam.

After reading Chinualumogu Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, one witnesses the events by which the Igbo society begins to fall apart. Our ancestral way of life is threatened and eventually destroyed by alien culture; Umuofia loses its soul and freedom. Literarily, Things Fall Apart is a story of the demise of Okonkwo. But it is also, a record of Igbo life before the coming of the British imperium. It chronicles what colonialism has destroyed. It is a way of life that no longer exists.

Similarly, documenting the injustices of slavery, Olaudah Equiano, a 15th century Eboe slave laments over the spirit of 10 Eboe men and women [which] remained restless for over 200 years. There is a continuum in the culture of Igbo exclusion and insecurity from the Trans-Atlantic-Slave era until now within the Lugardian political architecture.

This brief discourse is A CALL TO ACTION. It is also an invitation to become a member of the Ozoemena, Never Again. The mission of Ozoemena is to develop a strategic agenda for the future of Ndigbo. Without an Igbo strategic framework of action, the fulfillment of Igbo manifest destiny will continue to elude the land of the rising sun. Please confirm you wish to become a member of Ozoemena. Membership is limited to only twelve talented Igbo academics/intellectuals. THERE COMES A TIME IN THE HISTORY OF A PEOPLE, WHEN PROLONGED SILENCE OVER INJUSTICE ACQUIRES A SUPERFICIAL STATUS OF LEGITIMACY. Any further silence is tuffiarable!!

Ya Gazie!
