Director's Statement

Welcome to the Department of Theatre at Kansas City Kansas Community College. The Department of Theatre is rooted in the liberal arts tradition.

We offer both an Associate of Arts Degree in Acting and an Associate of General Studies in Theatre Technology and Design.

Our exciting, new program is noted for its professional atmosphere, its comprehensive nature, and its close faculty/student working relationship. In the department you'll have the benefits of a small, close-knit program within the environment of a comprehensive, urban community college with courses taught by some of the best professional actors, designers, and technicians in the Kansas City area.

Theatre students are most likely to succeed when they understand completely the theoretical, historical, and practical elements of the theatre.

Additionally, it is essential that students grasp the historical and social traditions, which created and continue to sustain the theatre as an art form. Here you will find a careful balance between classroom instruction and practical theatre experiences.

Our multicultural program promotes student involvement in all areas of production including acting, stage management, scenic design and construction, costume design and construction, lighting, sound, props, and management. Our production program provides a creative forum where theories learned in the classroom can be applied and augmented.

Theatre is one of three departments that make up the Fine Arts component of the Division of Humanities, which brings together the talents and expertise of the faculty, staff, and students in the Departments of Art, Music, and Theatre.

Fine Arts promotes a wide range of curricular offerings in the visual and performing arts through the various undergraduate programs in Art, Music, and Theatre.

The Department of Theatre encourages students to seek out and develop interdisciplinary pursuits among the visual and performing arts areas. Such pursuits would complement interdisciplinary performance and exhibit initiatives engaged in by the three departments. Fine Arts, through the offerings of the three departments, provide a wide range of public performance and gallery opportunities for the college community.

Ranging from opera/musical theatre through instrumental and choral ensembles to theatre productions in mainstage and studio formats to exhibits, these events contribute significantly to the cultural life of the college.

As spectators/participants or as performers, all students at KCKCC are invited to share in these activities. Open auditions are generally scheduled at the beginning of each academic term, and curricular credit may be achieved, depending on the performance ensemble or activity.

There is much to be learned in this dynamic program that offers Theatre majors a balanced approach to the study of theatre. The balance is achieved not only by the range of courses offered, but also by the combined excellence of instruction and production that has become the trademark of the department. The strength of the faculty and the reputation of the production quality are quickly moving the Department of Theatre into the ranks of one of the best two-year theatre training programs in the area.
