Mission and Philosophy Statement

The Department mission is to provide higher education and life-long learning to the varied communities in its service area of Wyandotte and Leavenworth counties. It offers academic, career, and personal development opportunities by providing an accessible and supportive learning environment.

The Department provides career and transfer education in Mathematics that enables students to pursue a baccalaureate degree at a four-year college or university, and offers certificate and/or associate degrees in Mathematics. It offers developmental Mathematics courses that recognize the needs of the students to improve their basic learning skills and prepare them for higher level Mathematics courses in order to make satisfactory progress toward their educational objectives.

The Department believes in a philosophy to fulfill and accomplish its mission as follows:

Every motivated student can experience success in learning Mathematics.

  • Students learn best in context - that is, when they can relate what they are learning to life experiences.
  • Students should be given the opportunity to understand concepts (rather than just master techniques) in order to transfer knowledge.
  • Students better retain knowledge if they participate in its discovery and application.
  • Students should have access to calculators and other technology to empower them in their learning.
  • Students' use of technology in learning Mathematics enhances their technological literacy and reflects the use of technology in society.
  • All learning styles should be considered in teaching Mathematics, and evaluation of student performance should accommodate diversity.
  • Incorporating team learning experiences in education develops team skills enabling students to effectively participate in collaborative endeavors.
  • Interactive Mathematics is instrumental to success of 21st century education reform.
  • Learning and appreciating Mathematics is a life-long experience.

Even though the Mathematics Department mainly serves the population in Wyandotte and Leavenworth counties, students from other counties such as Johnson, Douglas and even some other states besides the State of Kansas have access to the department program. International student enrollment to the college allows the department to extend its services to other countries as well. The degrees and extensive teaching experience of the Mathematics faculty with their dedication to higher education provides quality education to satisfy the Kansas City Kansas Community College institutional goals with perfection.
